Side Hustles and Tax

Side Hustles and Tax: What You Need to Know for 2024. The rising cost of living has pushed many South Africans to explore alternative income streams. Whether you’re managing a side hustle alongside your 9-to-5 job, renting out a room in your home, or starting a business post-retirement, these additional earnings come with important tax obligations. One pressing question is: Should you declare your side income to SARS (South African Revenue Service)? What SARS Considers “Trade” According to SARS, “trade” encompasses any profession, business, occupation, or venture, including letting out property. However, it excludes income solely from employment. This means that side hustles, services, or even renting out a room are all considered taxable trades. Thankfully, SARS offers primary, secondary, and tertiary rebates that reduce your income tax liability. However, it’s crucial to submit tax returns—even if your taxable income falls below the threshold—to ensure compliance and avoid penalties. Do You Need to File a Tax Return? If you answer YES to any of the following questions, you are required to file your tax return for the 2024 financial year (1 March 2023 to 29 February 2024): Did you conduct any trade in South Africa, including a side business or rental activity? Are you a South African tax resident conducting trade or employment outside South Africa? Did you receive allowances such as travel, subsistence, or office bearer allowances? (Check your IRP5/IT3(a) for details.) Do you hold funds in foreign currency or assets outside South Africa worth more than R250,000 at any time during the tax year? Did you have capital gains or losses exceeding R40,000? Did you earn income or capital gains from foreign assets or funds? Do you hold participation rights in a Controlled Foreign Company? Did you receive an Income Tax Return or were you asked to submit one for the year? If you are a micro business, did you generate taxable turnover for turnover tax? What If You Didn’t Answer YES? If you didn’t answer YES to any of the above, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re exempt from filing a tax return. Many factors, such as rebates, tax thresholds, and allowances, determine whether filing is mandatory. Consulting a tax expert is essential to ensure compliance and avoid unnecessary complications. Why You Should Declare Your Side Hustle Income Declaring all your income, including side earnings, ensures transparency and keeps you on the right side of SARS regulations. Ignoring these obligations can result in penalties, audits, and stress that can easily be avoided with proper reporting. Need Help Filing Your Tax Returns?
